Tagore Anthems

Activity

Rabindranath Tagore created national anthems for two countries--India and Bangaladesh. Is it possible for one writer to accurately represent two different countries, particularly a country in which he is not a citizen?

In today's activity you will do two things:

Part 1:

Read and evaluate the two anthems written by Tagore. Write a 1/2-page response that compares and contrasts two national anthems of your choosing. Some questions to keep in mind:

a. What does the nation hold valuable? Look at the language used - is it religious, war-based, idealist, patriotic?

b. When was the anthem written? Think about the historical moment.

c. Does this anthem truly represent the culture for which it was written?

Part 2:

Review the United States National Anthem. Do you feel that it accurately represents today's American Culture? In this extra credit activity, you will compose a new anthem that represents current values in our country.
